And if he negotiated to be able to pick 2 members first before everyone else, then it wouldn't really be breaking anything if his first pick was Cai'er instead. Now he blatantly chooses to offend Cai'er and appease green haired dude when he could have done it in the other order with the same end result, without all this drama.

The promise was for him to be selected, yes. You only get to choose one, at least from what I'm understanding. Meaning that if he chose anyone else, even if he had a plan to get both, it still would be dishonorable. It means he chose her and decided to use another method to try and pull him in as his second choice which was not the deal. It might seem very minor to us but for a deal and honor, as well considering their culture, it would make a lot more sense. You have to remember where this comes from and although to us he could have done different methods to make things easier on himself, it's a bit different to them. He did tell her to trust him till the end and I feel she really didn't. He didn't want to get into the full details for some reason, which is probably the only part that really bothers me.

I will also mention, there possibility that he will be able to choose both isn't 100%. He has to convince them to let this happen while also convincing the others that get to choose it's fair. After all, I'm sure everyone would love to choose two people or even have her as an option. So choosing her first is safer, even if she's unstable, as it wouldn't destroy his honor if everyone rejected the two choices option he's about to suggest potentially.

Agreed, you explained this damn near perfect, it shouldn't be any more confusion, but I guess some just aren't mature enough. Them as knights remind us over and over how honor is very important and one of the foundational building blocks. He was keeping and fulfilling his promise to Lin Xin, and by also choosing Cai'Er, but she had a melt down/temper tantrum before he could call her name too (though I'll admit he took unreasonably long, like wtf did you have to pause so long in between names smh).

But I didn't think about how the other characters who have to choose one person would react. I could imagine him trying to convince them it's "fair" to choose 2 people while they choose 1. Anime like this often focus on the romance aspects every now and then. Some people get invested in the love aspect between characters. As a writer, I see what they were trying to achieve. They wanted her to show her trauma and damage to the MC, that way he can show he's the better person and is willing to take all the pain and help her heal. She is very unstable and untrusting, even to the MC, which means their relationship is like a trapeze act currently. Even though it was poorly done, they had to put the MC in a situation where she'd freak out and he'd have to shine being able to save her despite the fact nobody could. I honestly think there are betters ways this could have been done, but I really do understand why the route went that way. He's in a way truly started to heal her as he has proven he really won't abandon her and will even risk his life if she's in danger. He's also shown that she jumps to conclusions quickly and was definitely in the wrong. It's definitely given some growth to the character and I hope that we can slowly move out of the broken heroine stage but not so slow that it's torture.

I really don't care for the episode to much but understand it's importance for future heroine things. I hope they improve her character to be better then it currently is and will wait patiently to see the progress. ^w^

I'm also a writer and understand what they were "TRYING" to do but like you said it was poorly done and barely accomplished their true goal. I believe there were many other ways to do so, this one just fell flat. Seriously, all it did was make her look like a psycho (to the audience) instead of showing her fcked up mentality created from her terrible childhood. Though, for the mc, I guess it showed him how broken she was and how strong & fragile their relationship was, as she clung to his every word and if slightly altered, caused her faith in them to shatter. As he learned more about her childhood that we already have, but we're not the mc and they misplaced when and where to implement a huge development, it could've been beautiful if it made more sense and showed the gravity of the situation.

So, I still stand by my statement, this was almost unbearable and before I knew it, I already watched it all lol. So they got me but next time idk. Hopefully her character isn't further misrepresent her as it's meant to be, otherwise it could tarnish the character and end up like Sakura from Naruto lmao.

Well, the details deviate from the novel a bit but roughly still same gist.

He never discussed this with the commander prior. When he announce his pick, she cough out blood and her grandfather attack MC and stopped by the throne knight guy. Cai'er wants to stop her grandfather cause she know he will kill MC and said issue was between him and her. MC then declare he want to give up the stove for a 2nd pick of team member which the official all said no. He then said he will drop out of leading the demon squad and will fight the next tourny to pick Cai'er, if not allow, he will abandon everything and just follow her. They postpone it for next day and decide to agree to let the top 3 to relinquish the prize for a 2nd teammate if they wish. Later Lin Xin try to explain and MC still insist he would still pick the same choice. Pissing grandfather off, Cai'er attack MC cause she didn't want him to aggravate the grandfather to attack. MC use his stove to aggro her and force her to stab him. Her dagger have some life absorption skill.
